One of my most favorite food when I came to Pekanbaru, is the Nasi Uduk by the road side. There are plenty of Nasi Uduk’s stalls you can choose, but only some are really great and might suit your taste.

Nasi uduk is similar to nasi lemak, that it is cooked in fragrant coconut milk and other herbs. It is really nice taste, and has a great smell.

When talking about nasi uduk, you have it with fried chicken or fried catfish with the nice sambal, vegetables, bean curd and tempe (fermented soy bean).

First, let me show you the typical road side hawker look-a-like. Its common here, and they are not only nice, but they are cheap too. That is if you put aside the hygienic of everything. :)

Lets talk about the food first, then come to the bad side. :)

Starting with the nasi uduk itself, isn’t it looked tasty? But oily

Next is the fried beancurd and fermented soy bean or what we called as Tempe. Accompanying it is the tasty sambal, not that spicy, but just nice.

And here comes the chicken and the catfish. Mostly, chicken they use are really small, perhaps mostly are kampong chicken.

For us Indonesian, we might already get used to having dinner or lunch by the roadside stalls, and not really taking into count the other aspects like how many times the cooking oil has been used to fried the same thing over and over again, how they wash their dishes, what is the quality of water they use, or is there any unknown secret ingredients?

Its not really healthy if you are considering the cooking oil that is used, and worst if they use the previous day’s left over cooking oil. Plus, everything you consume is oily.

Nevertheless, one or twice a month or less shall be fine, as long as you still have a regular exercise and control the diet carefully on the other days. Its always wise to have home cooked meal and best if you can prepare your own food.

Want to see more bad side? Check this out..

Yes, washing the dishes by road side, and the same water is used over and over just to rinse the plates and glass over. Plus, when eating by the road side, be ready to consume in dusts and the vehicles fumes as well. :) Nahh… eat first die later lah.

So i guess the difference between Nasi Uduk and Nasi Lemak is Nasi Lemak usually serves with Ikan Bilis and Peanuts. But Nasi Uduk does looks nice, just how much you need to pay for that?

HyperX: hehehe yeah, its really nice. For our great meal for two, with four plates of rice in total, two chickens, two catfish, two orange juice, one plate of beancurd and fermented bean, it cost about Rp. 40,000 - 50,000. That is about lesser than RM 20 for meal of two. :)
